April Fool's Day

Isaac came home from school on Monday March 31st all pumped up for "Joke day" the next day. He rambled off big plans. His ideas seemed a little off. I didn't think much about it and just assumed that his preschool teacher had taught him about it and told them they could do jokes the next day.
When I picked Isaac up from school on April Fool's day he came out of the building strutting his stuff with his pirate hat on his head and his light saber in his hand (two items I recognized from home). I was surprised to see them and just figured he had taken them in his backpack. He got into the car and I asked him how his day was. He said in a matter of fact voice, "Joke day wasn't quite like I thought it would be."
Later I discovered the rest of his joke day loot in his backpack. A HUMAN BODY book, a fisherman's hat, and a bunch of magnetic letters and numbers. I am left wondering what in the world he was expecting joke day to be like and what he was planning to do with all of his stuff.
I also have felt a little guilty for not making it a fun holiday for my kids. I'd love to hear your fun April Fool's day traditions or pranks. I've got to start early for next year. I just don't think I can stand to see another disappointed Isaac on April 1st.

I have some great recipes for things that look like one thing but are actually another. I've never tried them but they looked really cool!

I wish I could tell you I did something really funny and creative...but I didn't. Not this year. You got me beat on Easter even. I didn't give the boys anything for Easter. When you're in survival mode, it just doesn't happen. Last year I made meatloaf muffins with mashed potato frosting. I put food coloring in the mashed potatoes. I told Nathan he could eat dessert first just this once. He was fully expecting a cupcake and was so surprised! I also made "sushi" out of fruit roll-ups. I got my ideas from www.familyfun.go.com.

The only April Fools things I remember from around here are the jokes my kids played on me --like the year that we happened to be trading all the bedrooms around on April Fools. That means that everything from every bedroom and every closet was moved into the hall when Kristin came running downstairs to tell me that Speedy Bug (our gerbil) was out of his cage. The kids all thought it was great watching me come unglued!

I'd say a pretty funny trick is taking someone's cable so they can't watch ESPN (or General Conference.) Then...maybe you could spread out all their plates all over the house. Who thought of that anyway? Or...I'm sure Travis could help you put a bunch of cups all over the floor with a little bit of water in them all. I think of that every April Fools Day. Then, I think about how it got a little carried away...something about keys...Travis wasn't very happy, but I can't remember why. Oh well...it was fun. Maybe you could try taking his keys next year. See if he gets as happy!

Hey - those cups were in MY apartment! And I believe Matt Wheelwright was the recipient of a push in the back from... was it... Travis?! which sent him teetering into the kitchen/living room, splashing water all over the place. Oh, and SOMEONE also stole our doorbell button and liked to ring it at not-so-random times (always when Matt was there to go yell out into the hall how someone was "going to get it"). I wonder why we never escalated the arms race... Maybe we just left it up to the girls to steel the keys...
Kimberly, where are you these days?
