Baby Genius?

One day, when Isaac was approaching his first birthday, I was at the pediatrician's office in sunny Arizona. I over heard two women talking who seemed to be strangers to each other. They both had new babies and also seemed to be first time mothers, just like me. After asking each other how old their babies were one of the mothers told the other that her six week old babe could sit up. I chuckled to myself knowing, from my wise nine or ten months of experience, that this was highly unlikely. The other mother continued the conversation by telling the first that her baby could, too (at a whopping three months), and that she also said, "mama and dada." I was relieved to give up my eavesdropping when Isaac's name was called to see the doctor.

I recently read a magazine article, "My Baby Can Read", that brought me back to this funny experience. The author called bragging moms "one-uppers". I wondered how many times I had been guilty of "one-upmomship" and know it must be more than I think. As quickly as I acknowledged that I might be worthy of holding this title I began to justify my actions, thinking, "But can't I tell my friends about the amazing, funny, or just downright cute things my boys do?"

And so...at the risk of claiming the gold medal in "one-upmomship"...I would just like to say that Charlie can be so irresistibly cute and smart (more on his whining abilities later) and here is the proof.

First off - one upmomship is a total right of passage!!! Do it with pride! Second, Charlie is really REALLY doing great! He says so many words and sounds for being so young! You are a great mom Britt!

YAY!! It worked today. Charlie is SOOO cute!! Did your other boys start talking this young? I wish I had written down my boys' first words and when they said it. No wonder your boys are so smart...look at their parents! You're a great Mom. I can tell. I just told Judy and Randy the other day that I'm so impressed with what wonderful Moms/Wives you and Tiffany are. Travis and Quinn are lucky to have you 2 ladies!

Charlie must be so proud of his mommy. She knows all the animal sounds - she can even make a horse sound! Yay, Britt!
(by the way, we have the first "My Baby Can Read" dvd, and the other day, while I was changing my 12-month-old son, Ashby,'s diaper, he was making his usual babbling noises and I asked him what he was talking about. He replied, "True, I talk of dreams, which are the children of an idle brain, begot of nothing but vain fantasy." So I think the dvd must be working.)

What kind of parents would we be if we didn't think our own children were the most brilliant, fantastic, charming children ever born?
